The park is Tanzania’s oldest national park and remains the flagship of the country’s tourism industry, providing a major draw to the Northern Safari Circuit encompassing Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, Arusha National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It has over 2,500 lions and more than 1.5 million wildebeest.
Serengeti National Park covers about 14,759 square kilometers consisting of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest and the woodlands.
The park lies in northwestern Tanzania, bordered to the north by the Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Maasai Mara National Reserve. To the southeast of the park is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to the southwest lies Maswa Game Reserve, to the west are the Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves, and to the northeast and east lies the Loliondo Game Controlled Area. Together, these areas form the larger Serengeti ecosystem.

Serengeti National Park is endowed with a variety of wildlife. The Diverse ecosystem of the Serengeti Park offers a wide variety of impressive landscapes such as savannas, mountains, forest landscapes and rivers. There are also many predators, including more than 2,500 lions, about 225 cheetahs, about a thousand leopards, about 3,500 hyenas and several hundred wild dogs.
Serengeti Park is a home to the great migration of wildebeests and zebras. This normally takes place in the park with wildebeests migrating together with zebras at different seasons of the year.

The great migration is also one of the Seven African Wonders. An impressive spectacle in which more than two and a half million animals cover distances of more than a thousand kilometers! Some herds of animals are more than forty kilometers long! A gigantic procession consisting of wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and many other animals that, due to the drought, migrate in search of fresh grass and water.
The Serengeti National Park is therefore often seen as the highlight of a Tanzania safari. For these reasons, a visit to this park is definitely worth it!
Best Time to Visit Serengeti Park Tanzania
The best time to visit Serengeti National Park is especially during the two dry seasons, these are from late June to October and then the other season is from January to February. However, just like any other Tanzania safari destination Serengeti National Park is open all year round with different sections of the park possibly visited in any other months.
During the dry season, wildlife viewing is generally good as the grass is short and wildlife can easily be spotted. During this time, wildlife also usually converges in areas with water and therefore is easy to spot. It is mostly sunny with very little rain during this time, therefore few mosquitos and the chance of contracting malaria is low.
