Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nyakalengija (1560m) to Omukakiza Camp (2500m)
Begin the trek from the park gate at 1700m, walking 6.5km to Omukakiza Camp in 4-5 hours. Pass through the montane forest zone, spotting various bird species, three-horned chameleons, black and white colobus monkeys, and Rwenzori turaco birds
Arrive at Omukakiza Camp, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night
Day 2: Omukakiza Camp (2500m) to Lake Mahoma Camp (3000m)
Descend steeply for a couple of hours from Omukakiza, traversing through the bamboo forest. Arrive at the boardwalk via a level area, surrounded by Heather and afro-alpine zones
Reach Mahoma Lake, the deepest lake in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, fed by Mount Baker’s melted snow. Arrive at Lake Mahoma Camp, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night
Day 3: Lake Mahoma Camp to Nyakalengija via Nyabitaba Camp
Depart from Lake Mahoma, back to Nyakalengija, covering a distance of 8km in 3 hours. Drop further to the park gate via the Mubuku River and farmland. Proceed to dine and rest overnight at your preferred lodge
