Overview

You will be travelling through the foothills beneath the towering peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. The Mahoma route circles Lake Mahoma, passing through serene alpine streams, picturesque hills, and an amazing variety of flora and fauna. Wandering through woodlands and unspoiled alpine landscapes dotted with heathers, groundsels, and endearing huge lobelias is an incredibly picturesque experience.
Clear blue lakes, V-shaped valleys, swift-moving rivers with breathtaking waterfalls, and breathtaking snow-capped hills above your shoulders. With the aid of porters and a native guide, spend two nights at selected camps along the way. An amazing method to discover the heavenly biodiversity of the ethereal highlands without ascending to the summits is to walk the Mahoma Trail on the lower slopes of the Rwenzori highlands.

The 28-kilometer walking track, which leads to the peaks of Ibanda and Kilembe, is a great option for first-time hikers since it explores a cross-section of the Mountains of the Moon’s natural heritage. At Lake Mahoma, where it merges with the larger Central Circuit route leading to the park gate, this trail comes to an end.

Trekkers are captivated by the ethereal quality of the Rwenzori Mountains, despite their lack of grandeur compared to the Himalayas, Andes, or Alps. The untamed vegetation and its constant mists appear more appropriate for a paranormal science fiction setting. Is it its lengthy and legendary history, the rime-encrusted glaciers less than 50 kilometres from the equator? Or are the Rwenzoris the greatest treasures in the world because of the historical insecurity surrounding them and the difficulties of accessing the mountains?

Detailed Itinerary of the Rwenzori Mountains trekking

Day1: Entebbe – Kasese town

You travel west on your quest! You will be driven from Entebbe to Kasese Town by your private safari driver through the colourful Ugandan countryside. Your base camp for the exciting journey ahead will be Kasese, which is tucked away close to the DR-Congo border at the base of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains.
Allow your guide to help you pack and get your trekking equipment when you get to your lodge. Take some time to adjust to the difference in altitude as you get settled. Feel the excitement building as you take in the clear mountain air—your adventure into the Rwenzoris is about to start!
Equator Snow Lodge or Mihunga Lodge is where you’ll stay.

Day2: Nyakalengija Gate – Omuka Kizza Rest Camp at 2,977 meters

This is where your Rwenzori journey starts! Follow the Mahoma route around the Kyambogho Ridge and lose yourself in the colourful rainforest. Below, the patchwork of green that is the Mubuku Valley is revealed. Pay attention to the lively calls of blue monkeys and colobus, and maybe even the rustle of a chimpanzee that is passing by. You could just get a glimpse of these gentle giants if you keep a close watch out for the elusive woodland elephant.

This route is a haven for birdwatchers! Keep an eye out for the camouflaged Three-Horned Chameleon on the forest floor and the brilliant Rwenzori Turaco on the branches.
Kizza Rest Camp will be your sanctuary tonight. Savour breath-taking views of the slopes illuminated by waning sunshine, the Rwenzoris, and the distant glittering lights of Kasese town.

Keep in mind that eating dinner at camp takes time, so bring along some snacks to keep you going, like dried fruit or granola bars. To stay hydrated during your walk, remember to bring your water bottle and fill it up from our supplies.

Day3: Omuka Kizza Rest Camp – Lake Mahoma 3,515 meters

Eat an early breakfast to refuel before taking on the trail with newfound energy! The stunning Mahoma Lake is where you’re going today. Your guide may show out new elephant footprints as you climb through colourful heather and bamboo forests. Imagine how exciting it would be to follow them and possibly even come upon these magnificent animals in their native environment.
Climb up and follow a ridge that leads to the amazing Rukenga Valley. The scenery changes here; take in the ethereal Everlasting Flowers and the soaring Giant Lobelias that reach the sky. Rwenzori Mountains trekking

Keep in mind that these mountains are not home to any restaurants! At camp, your hard-working crew will cook a delectable meal. Enjoy a warm dinner and the symphony of the woods as you wait and take in the beauty of the lake scenery, which is a reward for your hard work during the day.

Day4: Lake Mahoma – Nyakalengija Gate – Ruboni Village

Take a leisurely stroll along Lake Mahoma’s shores after a well-earned breakfast. Enjoy the last glimpses of this untouched environment while inhaling the fresh mountain air. Keep a watch out for the distinctive three-horned chameleons as you make your way back through the Nyabitaba ranger station; they are masters of concealment thanks to their amazing camouflage.

The trail eventually returns to the Mubuku Valley after winding along the Mpanga Ridge. Back at the base, in Ruboni Village, just outside Kasese town, your journey comes to an end.
Spend the evening relaxing and rejuvenating at Equator Snow Lodge or Mihunga Lodge. As you get ready for the next part of your journey, think back on your amazing adventure in the Rwenzori Mountains.

Day5: Drive Back to Entebbe

Your private driver will be prepared to return you to Entebbe following a leisurely breakfast. Take it easy and enjoy the journey; the gorgeous drive takes roughly 6 to 8 hours.
