The Rwenzori Mountaineering Safari brings you to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park for a 7-day journey to the top of the Margherita peak in the Rwenzori Mountain ranges and back.

This trekking package is ideal for those who are already at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains, and if you are still in Kampala/Entebbe, you may have an extra two days to travel, making it a nine-day tour.

Itinerary

Day 1

Trek from Nyakalengija (1648m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2651m)

Breakfast in the morning and briefing at the RMS-Rwenzori Mountaineering Services headquarters. Begin your journey from Nyakalengija, passing via Bakonzo villages.

Register at the Rwenzori Mountain National Park gate, then enter the park to begin the Central Circuit route, which will take you past elephant grass and woodlands. It takes 4 to 5 hours to travel from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut, a distance of around 8 kilometers.

Day 2

Leave Nyabitaba Hut for John Maate Hut (3505m)

Leave Nyabitaba Hut for John Maate Hut after a hearty breakfast (3505m). Travel for half an hour through dense shrubbery and forest to Kurt Shafer-the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers.

For a lunch break, hike up to Nyamulejju Rock Shelter. Enjoy the spectacular Mount Stanley and Speke views. Travel through the alpine forest to John Maate Hut for a relaxing supper and overnight stay.

Day 3

Trek from John Matte to Bujuku (390m)

After a leisurely breakfast, begin your trek across the River Bujuku and through the forest to the Bigo bog, a swampy area within a valley.

After passing through the bog, travel up to the upper Bigo bog on a difficult excursion on a bicycle.

Early arrival to Bujuku Hut will reward you with a spectacular view of Lake Bujuku, Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and the surrounding environs.

Day 4

From Bujuku hike to Elena Hut (4541m)

At 4541m, depart Bujuku Hut for Elena Hut after an early morning breakfast. This is a 5-7 hour hike with two trails to choose from: the left trail leads up to Scott Elliot and then down to Kitandara Lake.

The right track leads to Elena Hut, which is located on Mount Stanley's rocky side. Expect spectacular views of Mount Speke and Baker from Elena Hut.

Day 5

From Elena hike to Margherita Peak (5109m) descend to Kitandara Hut (4023m)

Breakfast should be consumed first thing in the morning. Later, depart Elena Hut for Mount Stanley's Margherita Peak (5109m). Enjoy stunning views of Margherita Peak, as well as Mount Speke and Ireen Lake, from the summit.

Descend to Elena Hut for lunch, then continue by Scott Elliot trail to Kitandara for the night.

Day 6

From Kitandara Hut-Guy Yeom

After a leisurely breakfast, climb to the base of Mount Baker, which is notoriously slippery and requires caution

Ascend the steep side to reach the Rwenzori Mountain ranges' southern end. Get a pass to Fresh Field. The journey to Guy Yeoman Hut takes about 5-7 hours.

Day 7

From Guy Yeoman descend to Nyabitaba then to Nyakalengija

Get up early and eat a hearty breakfast. Leave Guy Yeoman Hut and descend through the bamboo forest to Nyabitaba. Take roughly 5 hours to reach Nyabitaba Hut along the slick trail and high rock.

After lunch at Nyabitaba Hut, drive 3 hours to Nyakalengija to meet your driver guide and be dropped off at your hotel or lodge in Kasese, or drive back to Kampala if time permits.

End of the Rwenzori Mountaineering Safari
